Description
Program Notes for Double Bass Concerto #1 by Gary A. Edwards

The composer’s main instrument in college was the string bass which he studied under David Whisner at the University of Idaho and Murray Grodner at Indiana University, graduating in 1964.

The Double Bass Concerto #1 (Total Time = 20:26 minutes:seconds) is available for solo bass and piano and solo bass and string orchestra. The plan is to arrange it also for full orchestra and solo bass.

The second movement is 05:09 minutes long. It is a slow movement beginning with Theme A which is a more contemporary sounding melody. Theme B consists of two bar phrases, echoed by the orchestra which eventually unites as both sections play two bar melodic phrases together.

Theme B is a pizzicato section. It begins with a complex melody in the bass with triplets and sixteenth notes in the bass and pizzicato quarter notes in the accompaniment. Theme C returns us to a lugubrious melody played by the orchestra and repeated by the bass. ending the second movement.
